About Surner Heating...

Since 1963 the Surner family has been providing quality fuels and service as well as energy conservation products to 21 cities and towns in Hampshire and Franklin Counties.

As with most new businesses, Surner Heating's humble beginnings began as College Oil Company on September 3rd, 1963 when founder, Ben Surner made his first delivery in a 1946 GMC oil truck he purchased earlier that summer.   At first the business was operated out of a gas station and repair shop he rented with life long business partner Steven Fellers.  As time moved forward, Steve and Ben would part ways when it came to the oil company, but would team up again in the not too distant future with other energy conservation minded company's.

The business continually grew and in 1968 Ben built the future and current home of Surner Heating across the street where he started the company in 1963.  A common theme throughout the years at Surner Heating has been conservation.  Ben was at the forefront of early energy conservation designed heating systems in the late 1960's and early 70's.  He had designed heating systems with outdoor thermostats, replaced boilers and matched them to the houses heat loss rather than replacing a gigantic oversized boiler with another one.   This all began at a time when oil was selling for .20-.30 cents a gallon, and conserving energy was not on everyone's mind.

In 1977 Ben and Steve would start two more business that had a direct impact on conserving energy.  The first, National Fiber Company was started in 1977.  National Fiber manufactured and distributes quality cellulose insulation throughout the northeast.  The second, National Vinyl Products were started in 1984.   National Vinyl manufactured several varieties of insulating energy efficient vinyl windows, and other home improvement products.

Both businesses' are still in operation today, but without Ben and Steve at the helm.  Although not involved in daily operations of the company, Ben still plays a very active role in buying and securing large qualities of oil for our 2.5 million gallon storage facilities in Springfield.  In 1991 the next generation took over, Bruce Montague and his wife Susan Surner took over daily operations of Surner Heating and Scott Surner joined the team full time in 1999.
